Because of Gibsons’s commitment to creating the most historically accurate and faithful recreations of their golden era guitars in the Custom Shop, many of the Custom Shop models have aniline dye used to begin the wood-finishing process. Modern Gibsons use an oil-based pore filler that’s more clear in colour and won’t bleed. Pore fillers, as their name suggests, fill the pores of the natural woods used to ensure complete and smooth coverage, and to prevent the natural material from being open to rot or warping over time. The fillers used have improved over the years, offering less bleed in the finish and allowing the wood to breathe more, for a more characterful sound depending on the wood used. However, Gibsons commitment to re-producing their guitars with startling accuracy leave sham no choice but to use pore fillers that were used in the 50s and 60s that may result in a light pink hue on some guitars over time – but this is just as it would have happened in the 50s! 

Modern pore fillers wouldn’t sound or feel quite the same because of the consistency of the fillers itself, so historic tools and materials cannot be compromised on. Despite the drawback of the older methods of pore filling, Gibson’s commitment to recreating their golden-era guitars cannot be understated.
